As I’ve mentioned before, I believe that in order to be well rounded in your knowledge of health and wellness, it’s important to gain insight from as many people as possible. There are always new opinions and facts being thrown into the mix and it can be tough to determine what is legitimate, and what it just jargon being spun by a company with an objective. This is one of the reasons that I put a lot of effort into my research before drawing my own conclusions or sharing my thoughts with others.
Some of you may have read my article last week about the benefits of circuit training. I had a lot of positive feedback and questions sent to me in regard to that post so I decided to dig a little deeper into the topic.
Earlier this week, I got the opportunity to sit down with Emily, owner and writer of Death by Emily (DBE). Emily is a wonderful gal who shares a very similar mindset to myself when it comes to health and wellness. It was so much fun getting the chance to chat with someone who shares a passion of helping others reach, and surpass, their fitness goals. ❥
Check out the awesome Q + A I had with this circuit training babe:
|Elyssa||I’m so excited to be able to pick your brain a little bit and learn more about you. Tell me about “Death by Emily”! What inspired you to begin this business?|
|Emily||I started Death by Emily kind of on accident, actually! I had been doing the same training program over and over for years and felt like I wasn’t progressing anymore. I decided to create a HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) circuit guide for myself and the two other girls I work out with, using my favorite exercises and moves, and my colleagues and peers started asking me for copies! My close friends started suggesting that I should turn it into a business, and before I knew it I had registered The Circuit Experience as an LLC, made an entire ‘Death by Emily’ 12-Week Guide, and enrolled in NASM for personal training- literally within 2 weeks.|
|Elyssa||That’s an amazing accomplishment to happen in such a short amount of time – Congratulations! So, I’ve had a number of individuals come to me with the complaint that they HATE cardio. Since I can relate to that on a spiritual level, I’ve been increasingly educating clients/readers on the benefits of circuit training.
|Emily||I’m one of those cardio haters! There’s literally nothing I dread more than going on an elliptical or a treadmill. I believe that circuit training, using a HIIT and weight focused method, is a better option because it burns a TON of calories in a very short amount of time, challenges your muscles, results in better body shape toning, and you feel SO accomplished by the end.|
|Elyssa||Preach, girl! I agree 100%. Going online, you see dozens of “customized programs” – tell me, how do your workouts differ from other programs out there?|
|Emily||I believe that DBE stands out because I offer a customized guide option, where I take time to work with the client individually (through emails) to tailor their guide to their fitness level, access to equipment, and fitness goals (fat loss, core strength, booty gains, etc.). I’ve created guides for super fit clients as well as clients who have never stepped foot in a gym! The 12-Week Guide can also be done at home, because you need minimal equipment and space to do the workouts.|
|Elyssa||That’s awesome. I’m finding that when clients come to me about their struggles with staying motivated, it seems that it’s their busy schedule tends to be the problem. So, it’s always great to come across a program that can be completed in your own home, on your own schedule!
What has been your favorite moment in your business so far?
|Emily||I think my favorite moment (I actually cried happy tears) was when I received a super sweet email from a client, thanking me for the positive impact Death by Emily has made on her life. She expressed how it’s given her back her confidence and drive, and feels healthier than ever. Knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s life is more rewarding than anything.|
|Elyssa||And those positive emails will only continue from here!
Now, time to learn a little more about YOU. What is your favorite workout?
|Emily||Besides lifting handfuls of chips to my mouth? Okay seriously, this is such a tough question! I have to be honest – I’m one of those bizarre people who LOVES leg day. Deadlifts are probably my favorite, because they take such great concentration, and as you progress and are able to increase your weight, you can literally feel yourself getting stronger!
DID I MENTION THAT THIS GIRL IS MY LONG-LOST SOUL SISTER?! #LegDayEveryday
|Elyssa||How would you describe your day to day life?|
|Emily||I wish I could answer this by saying that I make frequent trips to Bora Bora and attend concerts every night, but I feel like my daily life is pretty average. I work in health care, so my weekday routine is mainly this: Work 9am-5pm, go to the gym, make dinner with my boyfriend, snuggle my cat, in bed by 10pm. Exciting, I know! On weekends though I like to play soccer, go hiking, try out new menus, explore new parts of the city, see live music, and grab overpriced cocktails at brunch with my friends.|
|Elyssa||As a fellow fitness blogger and educator, you know how difficult it can be to stay up with the latest nutrition and fitness research.
What are your go-to sources for reliable content?
|Emily||Ah this is so true. I think finding sources that are backed up by research and science are always best. I don’t have one particular source that I go to, but I always look for articles written by professionals with confirmed credentials, such as a Certified Personal Trainer, Registered Dietitian, Physical Therapist, and so on.|
|Elyssa||What are the next steps in your professional fitness career?|
|Emily||I’m about halfway through my course to become a Certified Personal Trainer with NASM! Who knew there was SO MUCH information they have to know? I’m literally drowning in flash cards. Speaking more long term, I have a bachelor’s degree in a social service field, but I’m planning on going back to school to become a Physical Therapist Assistant, so that I can do more hands-on rehabilitative work!|
|Elyssa||As an aspiring health coach, I personally believe that motivation and support are the two most important factors in determining someone’s success on their fitness journey.
What advice do you have for those who may be just starting out?
|Emily||My first piece of advice for beginners is just get to the gym. Sometimes that’s the hardest battle. I still sometimes struggle with feeling unmotivated to leave the house, or even to get dressed to go work out, but once I’m there, I see everyone around me putting the work in, and I feel more motivated! Other tips: 1) Try working out with a buddy and hold each other accountable. 2) Reward yourself! You’re allowed one extra episode of Breaking Bad if you go to the gym today. 3) Make it a habit! Once working out becomes a normal part of your daily routine, it won’t feel like a chore!|
|Elyssa||We all have one … What is your guilty pleasure cheat meal?|
|Emily||I HAVE SO MANY. It’s like I was waiting for this question! If I had to pick one, my favorite would be eating an entire pizza by myself. Not having to share it with anyone, no crazy toppings (just cheese), and while watching a good movie. Wow okay, now I’m hungry.|
|Elyssa||In your own words, how would you describe “health + wellness”?
|Emily||To me, ‘health and wellness’ is defined by physical, mental, and emotional prosperity. These three components are all equally important, and I believe that with exercise, proper nutrition, a clear mind, and loving support, health and wellness are guaranteed.|
|Elyssa||What’s your favorite quote or mantra?|
|Emily||I’m the world’s biggest worrier, so it’s “Worrying is like paying a debt that may never come due”. I repeat it to myself about 800 times a day, and it really helps!|
